Really great piece, it's very needed for serious China scholars like yourself to help fight some of the narratives coming out of the AI industrial engine -- if nothing else to add nuance.

Uncertain times ahead, but most people can use more clear reporting on how China works in areas relating to AI.

I got a lot out of your book; it’s shaped my perspective on the diffusion of AI. But this post doesn’t take seriously the prospect that AI capabilities will improve massively on a surprisingly short timeline. One sentence aside, it’s dismissive of the possibility that recursive self-improvement can happen. That seems like an analytical mistake.
